To keep the Chapter healthy, we need to get the word out to people in local military, government and industry organizations. 2002 Charity Golf Classic set for Friday, September 6, 2002. Mark your calendars and head for the practice tee. The 13th Annual Golf Classic will be held at Bide-A-Wee Golf Course in Portsmouth, Virginia September 6, 2002. The cost is $75 per golfer, Active Duty Enlisted $55, due by 8/30/02. The tournament will have an 11:00 a.m. check-in, with a 12:00 noon shotgun start, with dinner and awards following the completion of play. Prizes and drawings galore. Opportunities for corporate sponsorships, hole sponsorships, and prize donations are available. Volunteers are needed - no golfing experience required. In April, the Hampton Roads Chapter had the honor of presenting two AFCEA Educational Foundations scholarships to students affiliated with the Hampton Roads NROTC Unit. The 2002 Vice Admiral Jerry O. Tuttle Science and Technology Scholarship was presented to Navy Officer Candidate Henry Amdasue, at the Chapter’s April 9 meeting. On April 13, an AFCEA Educational Foundation NROTC Scholarship was presented to Officer Candidate Ron Hemmelgarn at the Unit’s Pass-In-Review ceremony. Change of Address! About our speaker Phil Lacombe is Senior Vice President for Strategic Initiatives of Veridian. In this position, he leads the homeland security and C-4ISR business lines that focus Veridian capabilities from across the company into cohesive solutions for national security, defense and other government customers. In homeland security, Veridian’s capabilities in information operations and computer network defense, and chemical, biological and radiological defense provide integrated offerings for the nation’s counter terrorism challenges. On the C-4ISR side, Veridian’s leadership in imaging, knowledge discovery and distribution creates a set of standard-setting offerings for critical intelligence and defense missions. Mr. Lacombe serves on the boards of several organizations including the national Information Technology - Information Sharing and Analysis Center (IT-ISAC), where he is the Secretary of the Board. Established under the guidance of PDD 63, the IT-ISAC is the information technology industry’s center to share infrastructure vulnerability, threat and incident information. He also serves on the board of advisors of the Homeland Security Institute and on several other advisory groups for government and private sector organizations. With Veridian since February 1998, he served as President of Veridian’s Information and Infrastructure Protection Sector providing information operations, network protection and infrastructure risk management and protection services to a range of defense, intelligence and other government customers at the local, state and federal levels. Before joining Veridian, Mr. Lacombe was the Director of the President’s Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection (PCCIP), a position he held from September 1996 until delivery of the Commission’s report in September 1997. Established by Executive Order of the President, the PCCIP presented a strategy for dealing with threats to the nation’s critical infrastructure and focused on the emerging dimension of cyber threats. With delivery of the Commission report, Mr. Lacombe was named Director of the CIP Transition Office under the National Security Council to support the inter-agency effort that drafted Presidential Decision Directive 63. Before joining the Commission, Mr. Lacombe was the Managing Director of the Aerospace Education Foundation, a not-for-profit element of the Air Force Association providing educational programs nationwide. Mr. Lacombe also served as the Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Commission on Roles and Missions of the Armed Forces from July 1994 through August 1995. He was responsible for drafting the Commission’s report, “Directions for Defense”. In January 1994, Mr. Lacombe retired with twenty years service as a colonel in the US Air Force. His assignments in the Air Force included: Speech Writer to the Secretary of Defense; Assistant to the Commander of Air Force Systems Command; Counter Narcotics Strategy at the National Drug Policy Board in the Office of the U.S. Attorney General, where he drafted the first national counter-narcotics strategy; and Director of Public Affairs for US and Air Force Space Commands and the North American Aerospace Defense Command. He is a graduate of the National War College, Air Command and Staff College and Squadron Officers School. He has a Master’s Degree in Journalism from the University of North Carolina and a BA from the University of Massachusetts. What do you want to know?
