The Armed Forces Communications-Electronics Association (AFCEA) Hampton Roads Chapter will plan to award/renew nine $2,500 scholarships in 2009 to outstanding students from the Hampton Roads area.  Subject to the availability of funds, scholarships will be awarded to students enrolled for the 2009/2010 academic year as full-time students in a course of study at an accredited four-year college or university that leads to a Bachelor’s degree in one of the Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) disciplines that will prepare the student for a professional career supporting AFCEA’s focus on military communications, electronics, information technology, and intelligence systems.

Once awarded, scholarships may be renewed for up to four years of undergraduate study resulting in a total scholarship value of $10,000. Seven 2008 scholarship winners are potentially eligible for renewal of their scholarships and renewal of scholarships to 2008 scholarship winners who meet renewal criteria will have first claim on funds available for 2009 scholarships.  Previous year’s scholarship winners are not automatically renewed as they must continue to meet the criteria for renewal of their scholarships.    In 2008, four of seven scholarship winners potentially eligible for renewals of their scholarships did not meet the renewal criteria.  Six of the nine scholarships awarded in 2008 were initial awards to new applicants. 

Eligibility Criteria.

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
  • Applicants may be graduating high school seniors or current undergraduates who have completed no more than three years of undergraduate study
  • Applicants must be accepted for enrollment during the 2009/2010 academic year in a full-time course of study at an accredited four year college or university located within the United States. Enrollment in distance learning programs does not meet this requirement.
  • The applicant’s chosen  course of study must lead to a Bachelor of Science degree within four years of undergraduate study in one of STEM) disciplines that will prepare the for a professional career supporting AFCEA’s focus on military communications, electronics, information technology, and intelligence systems.  Qualifying academic majors include, but are not limited to, Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical, Communications, and Nuclear Engineering; Computer Science; Management Information Systems; Mathematics; and Physics.
  • Eligible applicants include residents of Hampton Roads, active duty military personnel assigned to commands within Hampton Roads, and dependents of such active duty military personnel.
  • Recipients of AFCEA Hampton Roads Chapter Scholarships awarded in 2008 may apply for renewal of their scholarships by submitting an application each year that demonstrates that they have met the following minimum criteria for renewal:
    • Continued enrollment for the 2009/2010 academic year in a course of studies that will lead to a degree in a qualifying major within four years of undergraduate study
    • No more than one grade below a “B” in a college level STEM course.
    • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 for all college level courses completed as of the date of application

2008 AFCEA Hampton Roads Scholarship Winners

Scholarship Renewals

Mr. Joel Brown, 4th and Final Award for continuation of studies as a Computer Science major a Radford University. Mr .Brown completed his junior year with a 3.652 cumulative GPA

Ms. Sara Mohon, 4th and Final Award for continuation of studies as a Physics major a the College of Willima and Mary.  Ms. Mohon completed her junior year with at 3.36 cumulative GPA

Ms Swarnali Sengupta, 2nd Award for continuation of studies as a Bio-Mechanical Engineering major at Johns Hopkins University.  Johns Hopkins does not assign numerical grades to 1st year students, but adjectival ratings awarded to Ms. Sengupta in all of her courses indicate a GPA greater than 3.3 if numerical grades had been assigned.

New Scholarship Awards in 2008

Ms. Jasmine Berry graduated in 2008 from Heritage High School, Newport News, VA with a cumulative GPA of 3.81 and AP credits in 12 courses.  She was accepted by Norfolk State University as a Computer Science major.

Ms Kathryn Brewer graduated in 2008 from Jamestown High School in Williamsburg, VA with a cumulative GPA of 3.69 and AP credits in 7 courses.  She was accepted by Virginia Tech as a General Engineering major.

Mr. Scott Davidson, is a 2007 graduate of First Colonial High School, Virginia Beach.  In 2008, he completed his freshman year as a Civil Engineering major at Clemson University with a 4.0 GPA

Mr. Hancock Cody graduated in 2008 from Landstown High School, Virginia Beach, with a 3.583 cumulative GPA.  He was accepted by ECPI College of Technology as a Computer Science major

Mr Stephen Hong graduated in 2008 from the International Baccalaureate program at Princess Anne High School, Virginia Beach with a cumulative GPA of 4.189 and AP credits in four courses.  He was accepted at Virginia Tech as a General Engineering major.

Ms Tina Wang graduated in 2008 from York High School, York County with a 4.78 GPA and AP credits in 9 courses.  She was accepted by Princeton University as an Electrical Engineering major.
