Applications for 2008/2009 academic years scholarships must be postmarked no later than April 25, 2008

The Armed Forces Communications-Electronics Association (AFCEA) Hampton Roads Chapter will award nine $2,500 scholarships to outstanding students from Hampton Roads who will be enrolled full time during the 2007/2008 academic year in a course of study at an accredited four-year college or university that leads to a Bachelor’s degree in one of the hard sciences or engineering disciplines.

Scholarships may be renewed for four years of undergraduate study resulting in a total scholarship value of $10,000 for scholarship winners in each year of their undergraduate education. This year, seven 2007 scholarship winners are potentially eligible for renewal of their scholarships. In 2006, two of the seven 2005 scholarship winners potentially eligible for renewal did not meet renewal criteria and four of nine 2007 scholarships were awarded to new applicants.

Eligibility Criteria.

  • Candidates must be U.S. citizens.
  • Candidates may be graduating high school seniors or current undergraduates who have completed no more than three years of undergraduate study
  • Candidates must be accepted for enrollment during the 2008/2009 academic year in a full-time course of study at an accredited four year college or university located within the United States. Enrollment in distance learning programs does not meet this requirement.
  • The candidate’s course of study must lead to a Bachelor of Science degree within four years of undergraduate study in one of the “hard science” or engineering disciplines that will prepare the candidate for a career that supports AFCEA’s focus on military communications, electronics, information technology and intelligence systems. Qualifying academic majors include, but are not limited to, Aerospace, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical, Communications, and Nuclear Engineering; Computer Science; Management Information Systems; Mathematics; and Physics.
  • Eligible candidates include residents of Hampton Roads, active duty military personnel assigned to commands within Hampton Roads, and dependents of such active duty military personnel.
  • Recipients of AFCEA Hampton Roads Chapter Scholarships may apply for renewal of their scholarships by submitting an application each year that demonstrates that they have met the following minimum criteria for renewal:
    • Continued enrollment for the 2008/2009 academic year in a course of studies that will lead to a degree in a qualifying major within four years of undergraduate study
    • No grade below B in any college level math, science, or engineering course.
    • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 for all college level courses completed as of the date of application
